How much does a website cost for a small business in South Africa?
The 2027 guide to real prices, ongoing costs and what you get for your money.

Ask five web designers in South Africa what a website costs, and you will likely get five very different answers. You might see R1,500 on a classifieds site, while a large agency in Cape Town or Johannesburg quotes R45,000 or more. No wonder business owners feel confused.
The truth is that "a website" can mean very different things. The price depends on who writes the content, how many pages you need, how custom the design is, and how much of the technical work is taken off your plate. In this guide, I break down the real costs for 2027, so you can budget with confidence and know exactly what you are paying for.
What Are You Actually Paying For?
Before comparing quotes, it helps to understand what goes into a professional website. A good quote should cover most, if not all, of the following:
Planning and structure: Working out which pages you need, what goes on each one and how visitors move towards contacting you.
Content and copywriting: The words on every page. This is often the most underestimated part of the project, and the part that sells your services.
Design: A layout that reflects your brand, builds trust and looks professional on every screen size.
Development and setup: Building the site, connecting your domain, setting up contact forms and booking tools, and making sure everything works.
Search-friendly foundations: Fast loading, clean structure, proper page titles and mobile-friendliness, so your website is ready to be found from day one.
The 3 Typical Ways to Get a Website in South Africa
1. DIY Website Builders (Wix, Squarespace and Similar)
Typical cost: roughly R300 to R750 per month, ongoing, and often linked to the US dollar, so the price can creep up with the exchange rate.
Builders look affordable and easy, but the catch is time. You write all the copy, choose the images, plan the pages and work out the design yourself. Many business owners spend several weekends on it, only to end up with a site that looks like a template and does not bring in enquiries.
2. Budget Freelancers and Template Fillers
Typical cost: around R1,500 to R3,500 once off.
This option usually means a pre-made template with your logo added. The common problem is that you receive a form asking you to supply all the text, headings and images. If you do not know what to write, and most busy owners do not have the time, the project stalls for weeks or months.
3. A Turnkey Web Design Partner
Typical cost: from about R4,000 to R20,000 or more, depending on the size and complexity of the project.
With a turnkey service, everything is handled for you: planning, copywriting, custom design, mobile responsiveness, search-friendly setup and launch. You deal with one person from start to finish, and you end up with a website that is ready to work for your business. Read more about how this works in my article on turnkey website design.
Real Pricing Benchmarks for 2027
To make this practical, here are realistic price ranges based on the kinds of websites small and medium service businesses actually need. You can see real examples of each level on my pricing page.
Starter Website: R4,000 to R6,000
A clean, focused website with a small set of pages, ideal for a consultant, a boutique food business or a sole practitioner. The focus is on strong design and well-written copy, giving you a polished, professional presence without unnecessary extras.
Growing Service Business: R7,500 to R12,000
Around 5 to 10 pages, with a dedicated page for each service, testimonials, booking or enquiry tools and often a blog. This suits businesses such as music schools, beauty and aesthetics studios or medical practices that need to explain several services clearly.
Extensive or Complex Websites: R15,000 to R25,000+
Larger websites with many detailed pages, multiple languages, property or product listings, custom fields or other specialised functionality. Retirement villages, care facilities and multi-location businesses often fall into this range.
Ongoing Costs to Budget For
The build is a once-off cost, but every website has a few running costs. Budget for these from the start, so there are no surprises later.
Domain name: A .co.za domain typically costs between R90 and R150 per year.
Hosting: Fast, reliable hosting costs around R300 per month.
Managed hosting and maintenance: Around R1,200 per month covers hosting, software and plugin updates, daily backups, security monitoring and performance optimisation, so your website stays secure and keeps running smoothly.
The Hidden Cost: The Blank Page Trap
The biggest hidden cost in a cheap website is not money, it is your time. A typical service business website needs thousands of words of clear, persuasive copy. When a quote does not include content, that work lands on your desk.
In my experience, this is where most website projects stall. The design waits for the words, the words never quite get written, and months later the old website is still live. Even when the content does get written, it often describes the business rather than answering the questions customers are really asking.
That is why I write the content as part of every project. If you would like to know why it matters so much, read the importance of content writing.
How to Choose the Right Option for Your Business
Just testing an idea?: A DIY builder can work, as long as you are prepared to invest the time yourself.
Running an established service business?: A turnkey website is usually the best value, because the copy, design and setup are all done properly the first time.
Comparing quotes?: Ask each designer exactly what is included. Who writes the content? Is hosting included? What happens after launch? The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest result.
A website is not just an expense, it is the place where potential customers decide whether to contact you. Spending a little more on a site that clearly explains your services and makes it easy to get in touch often pays for itself with just one or two new clients.
